El·e·mi n. A fragrant gum resin obtained chiefly from tropical trees of the genera Amyris and Canarium. Amyris elemifera yields Mexican elemi; Canarium commune, the Manila elemi. It is used in the manufacture of varnishes, also in ointments and plasters.
