 Law·yer n.
 1. One versed in the laws, or a practitioner of law; one whose profession is to conduct lawsuits for clients, or to advise as to prosecution or defence of lawsuits, or as to legal rights and obligations in other matters. It is a general term, comprehending attorneys, counselors, solicitors, barristers, sergeants, and advocates.
 2. Zool. (a) The black-necked stilt. See Stilt. (b) The bowfin (Amia calva). (c) The burbot (Lota maculosa).

 Bur·bot n.  Zool. A fresh-water fish of the genus Lota, having on the nose two very small barbels, and a larger one on the chin. [Written also burbolt.]
 Note:The fish is also called an eelpout or ling, and is allied to the codfish. The Lota vulgaris is a common European species.  An American species (Lota maculosa) is found in New England, the Great Lakes, and farther north.
