 1. An escutcheon; an emblazoned shield.
    The corpse lay in state, with all the pomp of scutcheons, wax lights, black hangings, and mutes.   --Macaulay.
 2. A small plate of metal, as the shield around a keyhole. See Escutcheon, 4.
