 Mer·cer·ize v. t.  [imp. & p. p. -ized p. pr. & vb. n. -izing ]  To treat (cotton fiber or fabrics) with a solution of caustic alkali.  Such treatment causes the fiber to shrink in length and become stronger and more receptive of dyes.
